Captain Paul Watson: Splits With the Sea Shepherd, Launches a New Navy and Prepares to Invade Iceland - Skaana
Eco-Pirate and Eco-Church Founder Paul Watson on Fighting for Whales and Phytoplankton, Launching Neptune’s Navy and Daring Iceland to Arrest Him
"If phytoplankton disappear from the ocean, we die... The ocean dies, we die." - Paul Watson
What would you do to save a whale?
Captain Paul Watson has risked his life for whales again and again and again.
One of the biggest challenges when it comes to saving the world is that there’s so little agreement on how to save it.
When I saw that Paul Watson had been tossed out of the Sea Shepherd Society – the organization that he didn’t just launch, but was the face and soul of, I had two thoughts:
1. Oh no.
2. Not again.
An interview I did with Paul Watson for Maclean’s Magazine back in 1996 led to me writing my book The Killer Whale Who Changed the World which led to Skaana and all the books and movies about whales and sharks I’ve written since. Paul Watson wrote the introduction to one of those books - Sharks Forever.
So catching up on his latest adventures was a treat - also a shocker because we caught up on his split with the Sea Shepherd society he founded. For links to everything he’s up to now, please check out our show notes:
"We're ecologically ignorant. And unless we learn to educate ourselves, we're not going to survive."
- Paul Watson
