Killer Whales Versus Orcas & Big Bigg’s Whale News on Skaana
NOAA Scientists Tom Jefferson & Kim Parsons on our latest podcast episode
One of the most amazing things about hosting Skaana is having the opportunity to keep up with all that humans are still learning about amazing orcas. It was a treat to talk with NOAA scientists Kim Parsons and Tom Jefferson about what we know about orcas, what we’re still learning and the language of science and civilians.
We split this episode into two parts because… well… so much material to cover.
NOAA scientists Kim Parsons & Tom Jefferson on killer whale science, killer whales versus orcas, orcas versus dolphins, how science becomes official, the challenges of translating science to civilians and so much more in the first of a special two-part episode on the two soon to be official species of orcas who call the Salish Sea home.
For more you can check out our shownotes or the research paper on the case for declaring that there’s more than one species or orca in the ocean.
Stay tuned for part 2 and also our upcoming interview about octopus with a couple of THE experts and all things cephalopod - Sy Montgomery and Warren Carlyle on their new book Secrets of the Octopus.
And our guests!

Tom Jefferson…

And for a change of pace me talking hockey… Yeah, it’s a picture of one of my fave Canucks - so the only real connection to Skaana is the orca logo - but this is a story for anyone who has ever thought, “that was such a dive!”
