Saving the Salmon and the Future
Eco-Warrior Alexandra Morton on Her Fights for Salmon, Her Fights Against Canadian Officials & What She's Fighting For
Hello from the sunny side of the Salish Sea,
I hope you’re doing as well as possible in these strange times. And, if you’re in Canada, I hope you’re gearing up to vote. Here’s a list of all the ways you can vote. And applying to vote by mail - easy peasy.
I’m so happy to be sharing this interview with one of my heroes - eco-warrior, Alexandra Morton. I first heard of Alexandra as “the whale lady” who was doing cutting-edge research on orca communications. In an alternate universe, I think she might have been the person who figured out what orcas are saying to each other and maybe even what they’d like to say to us. Sadly, in this universe the orcas disappeared from her home near the Broughton Archipelago about the same time the fish farms showed up. Suddenly, she had a new quest. She was going to save the whales by saving the salmon. She never imagined this quest would take over her life.
Alexandra shares her stories about fighting for salmon, orcas and us in her new book Not on My Watch (we were given permission to share an excerpt on our Patreon page. Enjoy.) and on our latest episode of Skaana.
This is one of the most intense conversations I’ve ever had on the podcast about what’s happening in Canada as we both wondered about whether there were some government officials who might be a lot happier if the wild salmon and orcas disappeared.
The photo above… I took it when Alexandra launched her mission with the Sea Shepherd - Operation Virus Hunter. And yep, that’s Pamela Anderson with her.

And please share this one.
Also, in case you haven’t seen them yet… A couple of amazing videos sharing the story of Rhapsody - the star of the Royal BC Museum’s new exhibit: Orcas Our Shared Future.
Thanks for reading/listening/viewing and, most of all, thanks for caring.
