Rowena Rae on How We Can Save Salmon, the Fish Farm Jail-Break & Unlocking the Mysteries of a Keystone Species
From 1940 to 1984, The Vancouver Sun newspaper sponsored an annual salmon derby awarding a big cash prize to whoever caught the biggest fish on a specific day in August.
Why did it end in 1984? Because salmon were already getting scarce in BC waters. And those 30-pound award-winning fish were becoming even rarer.
Over 40 years later every day for the remaining southern resident orcas is a salmon derby -but their prize is survival.
Rowena Rae’s wonderful book Salmon: Swimming for Survival looks at the past and future of this fab fish and unlocks the secrets of a keystone species.
I met Rowena during Oceans Week this summer when we were both reading at the Royal BC Museum. She’s a fantastic storyteller with fantastic salmon stories to share.
