Why Octopuses Needed a Publicist
Author Sy Montgomery and OctoNation Founder Warren Carlyle on the Skaana Podcast
An awesome octo-pic from Secrets of the Octopus.
So this latest interview for Skaana was such a treat.
The biggest inspiration for my approach to my next kids book Octopus Ocean: Geniuses of the Deep - was Sy Montgomery’s essential book Soul of an Octopus.
I was so inspired by her stories of making friends with several octopuses that I hung out - and finally, um, shook hands with? - Storm (the octopus in residence at the Salish Sea Centre in Sidney, BC).
Meanwhile, Warren Carlyle’s essential website OctoNation was one of my key sources for the latest octopus science - and there are new discoveries about these amazing and brilliant animals all the time. And Sy and Warren shared some mind-blowing octopus stories in part one of this two-part interview.
These two friends - and friends of octopus everywhere - teamed up to write Secrets of the Octopus the companion book to the new National Geographic miniseries with the same name. The series took longer to hit Canada than the US but was worth the wait. The footage is just what you’d expect from National Geographic - stunning.
Warren Carlyle & Sy Montgomery on the beach. I’m sure there are octopuses watching them from the water…
Here’s their new book:
And my book.
My book will be out next year, but it’s available for pre-order now.
And here’s the Substack site where I share stories that aren’t about all things eco and oceanic…
